Stability analysis of a pine wood nematode prevention and control model with delay

Pine wilt disease is a destructive forest disease with strong infectivity, a wide spread range and high difficulty in prevention and control. Since controlling Monochamus alternatus, the vector of pine wood nematode (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus) can reduce the occurrence of pine wilt disease efficiently, the parasitic natural enemy of M. alternatus, Dastarcus helophoroides, is introduced in this paper. Considering the influence of parasitic time of D. helophoroides on the control effect, based on the mutualistic symbiosis and parasitic relationship among pine wood nematode, M. alternatus and D. heloporoides, this paper establishes a pine wood nematode prevention and control model with delay. Then, the stability of positive equilibrium and the existence of Hopf bifurcation are discussed. Besides, we obtain the normal form of Hopf bifurcation by applying the multiple time scales method. Finally, numerical simulations with two sets of meaningful parameters selected by means of statistical analysis are carried out to support the theoretical findings. Through the comparative analysis of numerical simulations, the factors affecting the control effect of pine wilt disease are obtained, and some suggestions are put forward for practical control in the forest.

Dynamic Analysis of a Delayed Differential Equation for Ips subelongatus Motschulsky-Larix spp.

The protection of forests and the mitigation of pest damage to trees play a crucial role in mitigating the greenhouse effect. In this paper, we first establish a delayed differential equation model for Ips subelongatus Motschulsky-Larix spp., where the delay parameter represents the time required for trees to undergo curing. Second, we analyze the stability of the equilibrium of the model and derive the normal form of Hopf bifurcation using a multiple-time-scales method. Then, we analyze the stability and direction of Hopf bifurcating periodic solutions. Finally, we conduct simulations to analyze the changing trends in pest and tree populations. Additionally, we investigate the impact of altering the rate of artificial planting on the system and provide corresponding biological explanations.

Noise-induced synchronization and regularity in feed-forward-loop motifs

This study explores the impacts of multiple factors (noise, intra-motif coupling, and critical bifurcation parameter) on noise-induced motif synchrony and output regularity in three-node feed-forward-loops (FFLs), distinguishing between coherent FFLs with purely excitatory connections and incoherent FFLs formed by transitioning the intermediate layer to inhibitory connections. Our model utilizes the normal form of Hopf bifurcation (HB), which captures the generic structure of excitability observed in real systems. We find that the addition of noise can optimize motif synchrony and output regularity at the intermediate noise intensities. Our results also suggest that transitioning the excitatory coupling between the intermediate and output layers of the FFL to inhibitory coupling—i.e., moving from the coherent to the incoherent FFL—enhances output regularity but diminishes motif synchrony. This shift towards inhibitory connectivity highlights a trade-off between motif synchrony and output regularity and suggests that the structure of the intermediate layer plays a pivotal role in determining the motif’s overall dynamics. Surprisingly, we also discover that both motifs achieve their best output regularity at a moderate level of intra-motif coupling, challenging the common assumption that stronger coupling, especially of the excitatory type, results in improved regularity. Our study provides valuable insights into functional differences in network motifs and offers a direct perspective relevant to the field of complex systems as we consider a normal-form model that pertains to a vast number of individual models experiencing HB.

Noise-induced synchrony of two-neuron motifs with asymmetric noise and uneven coupling.

Synchronous dynamics play a pivotal role in various cognitive processes. Previous studies extensively investigate noise-induced synchrony in coupled neural oscillators, with a focus on scenarios featuring uniform noise and equal coupling strengths between neurons. However, real-world or experimental settings frequently exhibit heterogeneity, including deviations from uniformity in coupling and noise patterns. This study investigates noise-induced synchrony in a pair of coupled excitable neurons operating in a heterogeneous environment, where both noise intensity and coupling strength can vary independently. Each neuron is an excitable oscillator, represented by the normal form of Hopf bifurcation (HB). In the absence of stimulus, these neurons remain quiescent but can be triggered by perturbations, such as noise. Typically, noise and coupling exert opposing influences on neural dynamics, with noise diminishing coherence and coupling promoting synchrony. Our results illustrate the ability of asymmetric noise to induce synchronization in such coupled neural oscillators, with synchronization becoming increasingly pronounced as the system approaches the excitation threshold (i.e., HB). Additionally, we find that uneven coupling strengths and noise asymmetries are factors that can promote in-phase synchrony. Notably, we identify an optimal synchronization state when the absolute difference in coupling strengths is maximized, regardless of the specific coupling strengths chosen. Furthermore, we establish a robust relationship between coupling asymmetry and the noise intensity required to maximize synchronization. Specifically, when one oscillator (receiver neuron) receives a strong input from the other oscillator (source neuron) and the source neuron receives significantly weaker or no input from the receiver neuron, synchrony is maximized when the noise applied to the receiver neuron is much weaker than that applied to the source neuron. These findings reveal the significant connection between uneven coupling and asymmetric noise in coupled neuronal oscillators, shedding light on the enhanced propensity for in-phase synchronization in two-neuron motifs with one-way connections compared to those with two-way connections. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the functional roles of network motifs that may serve within neuronal dynamics.

Hopf Bifurcation Analysis of a Class of Saperda populnea Infectious Disease Model with Delay

Under the background of double carbon, it is important to study forest pests and diseases to improve forest carbon sink. In this paper, we establish a delayed model associated with the larvae and adults of Saperda populnea, susceptible poplars, and infected poplars. First, we analyze the existence and stability of the equilibrium of the model. Second, we study the existence of Hopf bifurcation near the equilibrium and obtain the normal form of Hopf bifurcation by the multiple time scales method. Then, we analyze the direction and stability of Hopf bifurcating periodic solutions. Third, we analyze and conjecture some parameter values based on official data, and carry out numerical simulations to verify our results. Finally, we give some suggestions on the prevention and control of Saperda populnea.

Mathematical Modeling and Stability Analysis of the Delayed Pine Wilt Disease Model Related to Prevention and Control

Forest pests and diseases have been seriously threatening ecological security. Effective prevention and control of such threats can extend the growth cycle of forest trees and increase the amount of forest carbon sink, which makes a contribution to achieving China’s goal of “emission peak and carbon neutrality”. In this paper, based on the insect-vector populations (this refers to Monochamus alternatus, which is the main vector in Asia) in pine wilt disease, we establish a two-dimensional delay differential equation model to investigate disease control and the impact of time delay on the effectiveness of it. Then, we analyze the existence and stability of the equilibrium of the system and the existence of Hopf bifurcation, derive the normal form of Hopf bifurcation by using a multiple time scales method, and conduct numerical simulations with realistic parameters to verify the correctness of the theoretical analysis. Eventually, according to theoretical analysis and numerical simulations, some specific suggestions are put forward for prevention and control of pine wilt disease.

Mathematical Modeling of the Tumor–Immune System with Time Delay and Diffusion

This paper proposes a partial differential equation model based on the model introduced by V. A. Kuznetsov and M. A. Taylor, which explains the dynamics of a tumor–immune interaction system, where the immune reactions are described by a Michaelis–Menten function. In this work, time delay and diffusion process are considered in order to make the studied model closer to reality. Firstly, we analyze the local stability of equilibria and the existence of Hopf bifurcation by using the delay as a bifurcation parameter. Secondly, we use the normal form theory and the center manifold reduction to determine the normal form of Hopf bifurcation for the studied model. Finally, some numerical simulations are provided to illustrate the analytic results. We show how diffusion has a significant effect on the dynamics of the delayed interaction tumor–immune system.

Stability analysis of time-delayed SAIR model for duration of vaccine in the context of temporary immunity for COVID-19 situation

<abstract><p>As the COVID-19 continues threatening public health worldwide, when to vaccinate the booster shots becomes the hot topic. In this paper, based on the characteristics of COVID-19 and its vaccine, an $ SAIR $ model associated with temporary immunity is proposed to study the effect on epidemic situation. Second, we theoretically analyze the existence and stability of equilibrium and the system undergoes Hopf bifurcation when delay passes through some critical values. Third, we study the dynamic properties of Hopf bifurcation and derive the normal form of Hopf bifurcation to determine the stability and direction of bifurcating periodic solutions. After that, numerical simulations are carried out to demonstrate the application of the theoretical results. Particularly, in order to ensure the validity, statistical analysis of data is conducted to determine the values for model parameters. Next, we study the impact of the infection rates on booster vaccination time to simulate the mutants, and the results are consistent with the facts. Finally, we predict the mean time of completing a round of vaccination worldwide with the help fitting and put forward some suggestions by comparing with the critical time of booster vaccination.</p></abstract>

Dynamic Analysis of a New Financial System with Diffusion Effect and Two Delays

The dynamic behavior of a new financial system with diffusion effect and two delays is studied. The local stability of equilibrium is studied by analyzing the corresponding characteristic equation and developing the crossing curve method. Hopf bifurcation curves are obtained by three procedures and the critical value of delay of Hopf bifurcation is obtained. By using the central manifold theorem and the normal form theory of partial differential equations, the normal form of Hopf bifurcation with two delays is derived, and the bifurcation direction and the stability of periodic solution are determined. The numerical simulations not only verify these theoretical results, but also show that double Hopf bifurcation may occur and the two delays play a key role in chaos suppression. This study has important theoretical value of innovation and practical value in the macro-economic system.

Equivalence of MTS and CMR methods associated with the normal form of Hopf bifurcation for delayed reaction–diffusion equations

In this paper, we prove the equivalence of the multiple time scales (MTS) method and the center manifold reduction (CMR) method for deriving the normal form of Hopf bifurcation for delayed reaction–diffusion equations. First, we generalize the MTS method associated with functional differential equations to delayed reaction–diffusion equation for solving the normal form of Hopf bifurcation. This provides a user-friendly approach of analyzing the stability of time-periodic solutions, particularly, for the engineering researchers who are not familiar with CMR method. Second, we outline the CMR method associated with the computation of normal form of Hopf bifurcation for delayed reaction–diffusion equations. Third, we prove that the two methods can derive equivalent up to the third order normal form of Hopf bifurcation. Finally, different types of examples are presented, such as reaction–diffusion equations with Neumann boundary condition and Dirichlet boundary conditions, single delay and two delays, spatially homogeneous and spatially inhomogeneous periodic solutions. We obtain the equivalent Hopf bifurcation normal forms results derived by using the CMR and MTS methods for above examples, respectively.

Mathematical Modeling and Stability Analysis of a Delayed Carbon Absorption-Emission Model Associated with China’s Adjustment of Industrial Structure

Global warming has brought about enormous damage, therefore, some scholars have begun to conduct in-depth research on peak carbon dioxide emissions and carbon neutrality. In this paper, based on the background of China’s upgrading industrial structure and energy structure, we establish a delayed two-dimensional differential equation model associated with China’s adjustment of industrial structure. Firstly, we analyze the existence of the equilibrium for the model. We also analyze the characteristic roots of the characteristic equation at each equilibrium point for the model, then, we analyze the stability of the equilibrium point for the model according to the characteristic root, and discuss the existence of Hopf bifurcation of the system by using bifurcation theory. Secondly, we derive the normal form of Hopf bifurcation by using the multiple time scales method. Then, through the official real data, we present the range of some parameters in the model, and determine a set of parameters by reasonable analysis. The validity of the theoretical results is verified by numerical simulations. Finally, we use the real data to forecast the time of peak carbon dioxide emissions and carbon neutralization. Eventually, we put forward some suggestions based on the current situation of carbon emission and absorption in China, such as planting trees to increase the growth rate of carbon absorption, deepening industrial reform and optimizing energy structure to reduce carbon emissions.

Stability and Numerical Simulations of a New SVIR Model with Two Delays on COVID-19 Booster Vaccination

As COVID-19 continues to threaten public health around the world, research on specific vaccines has been underway. In this paper, we establish an SVIR model on booster vaccination with two time delays. The time delays represent the time of booster vaccination and the time of booster vaccine invalidation, respectively. Second, we investigate the impact of delay on the stability of non-negative equilibria for the model by considering the duration of the vaccine, and the system undergoes Hopf bifurcation when the duration of the vaccine passes through some critical values. We obtain the normal form of Hopf bifurcation by applying the multiple time scales method. Then, we study the model with two delays and show the conditions under which the nontrivial equilibria are locally asymptotically stable. Finally, through analysis of official data, we select two groups of parameters to simulate the actual epidemic situation of countries with low vaccination rates and countries with high vaccination rates. On this basis, we select the third group of parameters to simulate the ideal situation in which the epidemic can be well controlled. Through comparative analysis of the numerical simulations, we concluded that the most appropriate time for vaccination is to vaccinate with the booster shot 6 months after the basic vaccine. The priority for countries with low vaccination rates is to increase vaccination rates; otherwise, outbreaks will continue. Countries with high vaccination rates need to develop more effective vaccines while maintaining their coverage rates. When the vaccine lasts longer and the failure rate is lower, the epidemic can be well controlled within 20 years.

All Possible Bursting Attractors in the Neighborhood of Hopf Bifurcation Point Under Periodic Excitation

For a vector field with Hopf bifurcation at the origin, when periodic excitation is introduced in which the frequency of the excitation is far less than the natural frequency, bursting oscillations, characterized by the alternations between the large-amplitude and the small-amplitude oscillations, can often be observed. The paper tries to answer the common question of how many types of bursting attractors may appear in such a vector field. Based on the normal form of Hopf bifurcation up to the third order, by regarding the whole exciting term as a slow-varying bifurcation parameter, all possible equilibrium branches of the generalized autonomous system are derived, the bifurcation sets of which divide the parameter space into regions associated with different types of dynamical behaviors. It is found that, there exist totally four possible combinations of the regions that the trajectory of the full system may visit as the slow-varying parameter varies. Accordingly, four qualitatively different behaviors, i.e. periodic symmetric oscillations, periodic symmetric mixed-mode oscillations, fold/Hopf/Hopf/fold and fold-Hopf/fold-Hopf bursting attractors, are presented, the mechanism of which is obtained by overlapping the transformed phase portrait and the equilibrium branches in the generalized autonomous system. Furthermore, the dynamics of the generalized autonomous system in different regions in the parameter space may influence the structures of the bursting oscillations when the trajectory enters the corresponding regions, while the bifurcations at the boundaries of the regions may lead to changes between the quiescent states and spiking states in the bursting attractors.

The spatially homogeneous hopf bifurcation induced jointly by memory and general delays in a diffusive system

In this paper, by incorporating the general delay to the reaction term in the memory-based diffusive system, we propose a diffusive system with memory delay and general delay (e.g., digestion, gestation, hunting, migration and maturation delays, etc.). We first derive an algorithm for calculating the normal form of Hopf bifurcation in the proposed system. The developed algorithm for calculating the normal form of Hopf bifurcation can be used to investigate the direction and stability of Hopf bifurcation. As a real application, we consider a diffusive predator-prey model with ratio-dependent Holling type-III functional response, which includes with memory and gestation delays. The Hopf bifurcation analysis without gestation delay is first studied, then the Hopf bifurcation analysis with memory and gestation delays is studied. By using the developed algorithm for calculating the normal form of Hopf bifurcation, the supercritical and stable spatially homogeneous periodic solutions induced jointly by memory and general delays are found. The stable spatially homogeneous periodic solutions are also found by the numerical simulations which confirms our analytic result.

Mathematical modeling and dynamic analysis of SIQR model with delay for pandemic COVID-19.

On the basis of the SIQR epidemic model, we consider the impact of treatment time on the epidemic situation, and we present a differential equation model with time-delay according to the characteristics of COVID-19. Firstly, we analyze the existence and stability of the equilibria in the modified COVID-19 epidemic model. Secondly, we analyze the existence of Hopf bifurcation, and derive the normal form of Hopf bifurcation by using the multiple time scales method. Then, we determine the direction of Hopf bifurcation and the stability of bifurcating periodic solutions. Finally, we carry out numerical simulations to verify the correctness of theoretical analysis with actual parameters, and show conclusions associated with the critical treatment time and the effect on epidemic for treatment time.

Stability and bifurcation analysis of $ SIQR $ for the COVID-19 epidemic model with time delay

<abstract> Based on the $ SIQR $ model, we consider the influence of time delay from infection to isolation and present a delayed differential equation (DDE) according to the characteristics of the COVID-19 epidemic phenomenon. First, we consider the existence and stability of equilibria in the above delayed $ SIQR $ model. Second, we analyze the existence of Hopf bifurcations associated with two equilibria, and we verify that Hopf bifurcations occur as delays crossing some critical values. Then, we derive the normal form for Hopf bifurcation by using the multiple time scales method for determining the stability and direction of bifurcation periodic solutions. Finally, numerical simulations are carried out to verify the analytic results. </abstract>

Stability and bifurcation analysis of a tumor-immune system with two delays and diffusion.

A tumor-immune system with diffusion and delays is proposed in this paper. First, we investigate the impact of delay on the stability of nonnegative equilibrium for the model with a single delay, and the system undergoes Hopf bifurcation when delay passes through some critical values. We obtain the normal form of Hopf bifurcation by applying the multiple time scales method for determining the stability and direction of bifurcating periodic solutions. Then, we study the tumor-immune model with two delays, and show the conditions under which the nontrivial equilibria are locally asymptotically stable. Thus, we can restrain the diffusion of tumor cells by controlling the time delay associated with the time of tumor cell proliferation and the time of immune cells recognizing tumor cells. Finally, numerical simulations are presented to illustrate our analytic results.

Bifurcation analysis of a pair-wise epidemic model on adaptive networks.

The topological structures of complex networks have been playing an important role on the epidemic spreading. There has been several studies of pairwise epidemic models on adaptive networks with Poisson distribution, all of which have shown that the rewiring behaviors can lead to complex dynamics numerically or analytically. However, the triples approximation formula under Poisson distribution overlooked the degree of center node of triples which has dramatic effects on the structures. Therefore in this paper, through a new moment closure incorporating the effect of center node's degree, we study how the topological structures of adaptive networks influences epidemic dynamics. The SIS pairwise epidemic model is first closed by the new triple approximation formula, then we transform the model into an equivalent nondimensionalized three dimensional system. By the qualitative theory and the stability theory of ordinary differential equations, the basic reproduction number R0 of the model is obtained, the existence and stabilities of the equilibria are analyzed. Moreover, we prove that the model exhibits transcritical forward bifurcation, backward bifurcation, saddle-node bifurcation and Hopf bifurcation using the methods of bifurcation theory. In addition, by a numerical example, the normal form of Hopf bifurcation and the first Lyapunov coefficient are derived, which show that a stable limit cycle can bifurcate from the endemic equilibrium with larger epidemicity. Our study show that the adaptive behavior can lead to rich dynamics on epidemic transmission, including oscillation and bistability. Finally the numerical simulations which is consistent with the analytical results above are given.

Stability and Hopf Bifurcation of a Delayed Density-Dependent Predator–Prey System with Beddington–DeAngelis Functional Response

In this paper, we investigate the stability and Hopf bifurcation of a delayed density-dependent predator–prey system with Beddington–DeAngelis functional response, where not only the prey density dependence but also the predator density dependence are considered such that the studied predator–prey system conforms to the realistically biological environment. We start with the geometric criterion introduced by Beretta and Kuang [2002] and then investigate the stability of the positive equilibrium and the stability switches of the system with respect to the delay parameter [Formula: see text]. Especially, we generalize the geometric criterion in [Beretta &amp; Kuang, 2002] by introducing the condition [Formula: see text] which can be assured by the condition [Formula: see text], and adopting the technique of lifting to define the function [Formula: see text] for alternatively determining stability switches at the zeroes of [Formula: see text]s. Afterwards, by the Poincaré normal form for Hopf bifurcation in [Kuznetsov, 1998] and the bifurcation formulae in [Hassard et al., 1981], we qualitatively analyze the properties for the occurring Hopf bifurcations of the system (3). Finally, an example with numerical simulations is given to illustrate the obtained results.

Bifurcation\instability forms of high speed railway vehicles

The China high speed railway vehicles of type CRH2 and type CRH3, modeled on Japanese high speed Electric Multiple Units (EMU) E2 series and Euro high speed EMU ICE3 series possess different stability behaviors due to the different matching relations between bogie parameters and wheel profiles. It is known from the field tests and roller rig tests that, the former has a higher critical speed while large limit cycle oscillation appears if instability occurs, and the latter has lower critical speed while small limit cycle appears if instability occurs. The dynamic model of the vehicle system including a semi-carbody and a bogie is established in this paper. The bifurcation diagrams of the two types of high speed vehicles are extensively studied. By using the method of normal form of Hopf bifurcation, it is found that the subcritical and supercritical bifurcations exist in the two types of vehicle systems. The influence of parameter variation on the exported function Rec 1(0) in Hopf normal form is studied and numerical shooting method is also used for mutual verification. Furthermore, the bifurcation situation, subcritical or supercritical, is also discussed. The study shows that the sign of Re(λ) determinates the stability of linear system, and the sign of Rec 1(0) determines the property of Hopf bifurcation with Rec 1(0)>0 for supercritical and Rec 1(0)<0 for subcritical.
